started a village witch playthrough today! here's a little bit of exposition, i'm not sure where i'm gonna go with this concept but i really like writing my witch so far!

"My witch doesn't have a name yet. A witch gives up their name, their identity, and any memory of their passing when they leave a place behind - this is the cost of their gift. Their abilities stem from music - if they know the right song, they can do almost anything. They compose melodies with the memories only they possess of places they come from and those of the new life they create in their new town. They want to find the perfect place to finally set down their roots, a face they don't mind taking. They're leaving behind a small rural town and a lover they thought would be the one. Just thinking of their face breaks the witch's heart into one piece more, one more fragment dislodging from the rest. This world is in a variant of the modern day, with different locations and geography but the same timeline."

This place is pretty cute. Looks like a witch's hut out of a book. Good acoustics, I guess, and a nice view of the river. One bedroom, one bath, but I'm not fucking planning on having guests. Not after Theo. He doesn't even remember me. He doesn't remember how I told him he was fucking amazing and believed it too. He doesn't remember when we met. He doesn't remember the fight. Maybe it's better that way.

I need to stop being so angsty. It's messing with the ritual. Tomorrow's my first day, I guess. I hope nobody comes by.

2 of Wands

Maybe these townsfolk aren't so bad. I only got one client today, some woman in her mid-20s maybe? Dark hair, tied back in a bun with an admittedly really cute star barrette. She was... okay, I guess. Maybe even nice, maybe. Didn't even have something for me to do, just "came by to welcome me in." I broke and let her stay a while, which in no way had to do with her bringing over a basket of paczki. ...Fuck, those were good. I think they were homemade.

Tea only takes a few minutes with this new song I found - slow and soft but clearly allegro. Halfway between frantic and patient. It's not perfect yet, but it can at least muster the magic to make water boil faster. I love the way its magic looks, too. Golden winds swirling around me, then dispersing like a sigh of relief. I think her name was Isabelle, but she was VERY insistent on being called Isa. I haven't heard that one before. It's nice, I think. If everyone in this town is like her, maybe this place won't be so bad. Certainly be fuckin' creepy, though, people showing up to my house with stuff every day. I dunno. Nice people in large quantities are grating.

I hope she brings more paczki. They remind me of home.

What the fuck even was today?

6 in the morning, this 5'2" whatever-teen comes banging on my door. This guy is seriously fucked up, too. Bruises everywhere, a nasty gash across the chest, you-should-be-in-the-hospital level stuff. He limps inside, looks around, and starts telling me how I badly I decorated the place. Takes him a whole 10 minutes to finally say he's here for healing.

Anyway, I heal him up and offer him some food and he's... actually kind of okay. He's been through all this crazy stuff - he was hit by a hurricane, even. Can you believe that? I wasn't sure I could until I cast a song on him that told me he wasn't lying. At least, not fully. Kid's funny, too. Kind of an asshole, but in the fun way. I told him about the whole identity thing (no sense in lying about it - either I trust this place enough to stay or I leave and he forgets I exist) and he said he's trying to come up with a name for me. Think his name was Will? Yeah, pretty sure.

I drew: The one of swords which has the suggested interpretation.... You mix up a blend of herbs and bless it for someone in need. Enid has forgotten the original meeting with this young man. I imagine he went to the abandoned house feeling rather melancholy and was surprised to find someone there. Whatever Enid did for him, she has forgotten, but it obviously worked.

Enid is woken by a violent thumping on the door frame. A young man she does not recognise yanks the door open and crashes into the house. She looks around for an escape route. The white robed spirit is fluttering around the room

The boy is now in the stiing room where Enid had been sleeping "It worked! I did it exactly the way you said and it worked! She loves me! The most beautiful girl this side of the white mountains, well at any road the most beautiful girl that I ever saw and she is in love with me and all because of your potion"

Enid looks at this stranger with confused eyes. "Well I don't……."

"So like we agreed, I've got you some firewood, enough to last you through till summer but first let me see to this"

The peace of her makeshift home is shattered by this boy who has the stovepipe in clattering pieces and is now poking a long hazel sappling up the chimney. A bird's nest is knocked loose and he uses it as kindling in the belly of the stove. Once it is back together he strikes a spark and breathes the fire into life.

"I didn't….." Enid runs out of words.

The boy is off, fetching armloads of split logs and kindling that he stacks in kitchen near to the the stove. The noise and urgency of youth leaves Enid rooted to the spot. Now he is dusting and chair and bringing in close to the stove.

"Come and sit here" he takes her hands "you're hands are cold, I'm not surprised in this old house with no fire, I'll get your blanket"

He fusses and settles her in the chair and wraps her blanket round her shoulders. He fetches a battered old kettle from the cart. "we use this in the fields but you have more use for it than me". He draws a bucket of water from the well and makes tea. He cooks buttered eggs in an old skillet and cuts a thick slice of bread, all the time talking about his girl and her hair and the smell of her breath and her laugh and Enid soaks it in. The rich food and the warmth of the fire and this young man in love makes her smile and she is happy.

When he leaves, she thanks him for his kindness and makes him promise he will come back. He tells Enid that next time he will bring the girl. When he is gone and the house is quiet once more, the spirit returns to Enid's side, now a little bolder and more distinct, like Enid it is made a little more substantial by the warmth and the food and the company.

Enid has come to rest on the steps of an abandoned house. The house is large, with two storeys and windows in the attic. The forest is in the process of reclaiming the building. Branches scratch at the walls and windows, the shingled roof is thick with moss and the trunks of well established trees grow from the footings, their roots upheaving and twisting the walls. A tree has rooted beneath the veranda, its branches have pierced the roof above.

Enid senses a presence here. Something unquiet and spiteful presence. Something that needs cleansing. There is something else. This place seems familiar. Enid’s fingertips dig between the blades of grass at the foot of the steps. It seems to Enid that this soil is known to her. Could it be that it was once worked by her own hand? Memories are so difficult now but she has a feeling that she has knew this place once before.

Enid sits in the weak spring afternoon sunshine. She cannot recall why she is travelling or where she is going, perhaps this is her destination, it seems as if it was once home of a kind. Her feet and legs hurt and she is very tired. She will rest here for now. Eventually she can no longe itr ignore the hostile presence that provokes her attention, and she rises and opens the front door.

The house is still dry inside. From the hall Enid looks up the staircase. There is nothing up there that Enid need trouble her knees to climb those stairs for she shuffles around the ground floor, nothing is familiar. She walks through a kitchen, a scullery, a dining room. The furniture is mostly missing but there a a few large pieces, a huge dresser in the kitchen, a large table in the dining room.

As she enters the drawing room there is a howl and a raging spirit swirls in the air. Enid watches impassively as this pestilence gathers form, drawing in dust and spore and webs and dead skin and empty cocoons and fragments of long dead insects. This thing takes form, filling the air with the odour of long closed up rooms, stale air and dust. It becomes a roiling, malevolent cloud of the desiccated remains of what once lived. It fills the air above Enid, extending tendrils, exploring the space around her and closing in.

Enid fixes the heart of this thing with her watery eyes. They are usually cloudy but now she sees with clarity. “This is not your place, go so that we can both have peace”. The thing retreats but now churns with more fury, its appendages overturning furniture and slamming doors. Enid speaks again, this time fearsome and irresistible, she slams her walking stick down on the floorboards and it is banished. The thing withdraws, from the room and the house and out into the forest.

The exertion has been exhausting, Enid sits down on a mildewed chair and her head droops into her hands. The house breathes quietly, the trees scrape at the roof, doors creak, walls crack, adjusting to the absence of something that filled the dusty gaps and the voids of this building for so long.

Another spirit, faint, almost invisible approaches Enid. She is indistinct, the suggestion of a white nightgown or a servants uniform. She rests an arm on Enid’s shoulders while the old witch recovers enough strength to make up a bed for the night.

Village Witch Edith - Character Building and Prologue.

I have some time off work this week and plan to run through a short play through of Village Witch. I really like what Eliot Silvarian has done with this game and would really like to see a little community of other players, so here is my contribution. This is my first playthrough of the game, I'm interpreting the rule book as a source of inspiration when it is needed rather than prescriptive. I have little prologue and first scene that I am going to use for world and character building. Then I intend to use a Marseille tarot deck and the provided tables to see what happens next. I am also going to try to be open to other interpretations of the cards.

What sort of abilities do you have?
Enid was once extremely knowledgeable in the ways of witchcraft but age and dementia has left her with only a vague recall of what she once knew. She has rare moments of clarity when she can be more lucid, but these times are increasingly rare. It is more common for Enid to feel confused but in danger from some unspecific enemy.

What sort of setting is your world?
The world that Enid experiences is filled with the characters and magic of folklore.

Prologue

It is spring. The trees are still bare but the snow is melted. The first shoots are emerging. Sitting at the side of the rough farm track is an elderly woman. Her clothes are dirty and ragged but we're once fine. Her coat is warm and covered with bulging pockets. She sits on a log and draws absent mindedly in the mud. She traces out a sigil, the meaning of which is lost in the mist of failing memory. Suddenly there is the smell of ozone and the marks glow with blue flames. In the midst of the marks the small figure of an imp is summoned. With mischief in its eyes and a leering grin the imp scampers into the woods.

Enid is taken aback and swiftly scuffs out the marks and the flames with a worn boot. She looks about, checking if there have been witnesses, seeing no one, she swings her bag onto her shoulder and walks, with stoop, quickly in the opposite direction to the imp.

Only 560-some words today, but my first card draws. Interesting system! I wound up asking a Discord server I'm on for help coming up with the new ability, and they're still at suggesting more. This is the second time I've asked them for help coming up with an idea for an RPG, and they love the game.

That key lime pie recipe is one I've used for years, btw, including in my restaurant, and it gets a lot of love! Always prebake the crust, even a storebought crust, to keep it from going soggy, though. If you can't get fresh key limes, use Nellie and Joe's Key West Lime Juice.

Fantasy 1920s Florida Keys

Seashore

Island in a chain off a peninsula, house on stilts, witch for the middle third of the keys, everyone spread out, on the beach on one side of the largest island in that part of the keys, Marathon Key. Hanging herb garden dangling from the live oaks. Lots of forage around. Last witch planted berry bushes and citrus trees. Doesn’t know it yet, but this is a sea turtle nesting ground. Find out soon!

First meets Old Sam, an elderly person of indeterminate gender.
